The year was 2020, and Rohan Keshewar found himself stranded in Manali, a mountain town in the Kullu Valley, Western Himalayas, due to the sudden COVID-19 pandemic that had brought the world to a standstill. For most people, waiting it out would have been the obvious choice, but not for Rohan. He turned the situation into an opportunity and started a chocolate company, The Himalayan Chocolate, which was born out of a passion to create positive change in the local community.
Rohan's journey to the Himalayas was fueled by his desire to make a meaningful impact. Having grown up in Mumbai, where he studied commerce and enrolled in a master's program in social entrepreneurship at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, he was driven by a sense of responsibility to use his skills for good. He identified the Himalayas as the perfect place to start his entrepreneurship journey due to the region's reliance on tourism and limited manufacturing, which left many women with limited opportunities for paid work.
The seed of The Himalayan Chocolate was sown when Rohan joined the Nuropa Fellowship in Leh-Ladakh, a program that supports entrepreneurs in the Himalayas. He had been experimenting with local ingredients, including barley, a staple crop in the region, and creating innovative chocolate recipes. It was during these trials that he discovered the unique flavor of Ladakhi Roasted Barley, which would become one of the company's signature products.
However, it was the pandemic that forced Rohan to re-evaluate his plans and refocus on the local community in Manali, where he found himself stranded. He noticed that many women were being left behind, without opportunities for a steady income, and he saw an opening to create a business that would empower them. He met a local baker who helped him get started, loaning him his chocolate molds, and began experimenting with new flavors.
The story of The Himalayan Chocolate is not just about creating delicious chocolates but also about creating a platform for women's empowerment. By sourcing high-quality ingredients from local farmers and creating a product that is both unique and sustainable, Rohan is contributing to the economic development of the region and providing an opportunity for women to earn a steady income.
The Himalayan Chocolate's success is a testament to the power of entrepreneurial spirit and the potential for positive change in a community. Rohan's journey serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, we can turn challenges into opportunities and create a lasting impact.
